Heritage
While Hartman Marine Group in its current form was founded in 2003, our roots can be traced all the way back to 1775. Building on a tradition spanning seven generations of skipper-owners, Hartman knows the ins and outs of the nautical trade like no other. “Values and standards that have stood the test of time are at the very core of our company and underpin all our activities,” says current managing director Johan Hartman.
Established on the former island of Urk, Hartman draws on a nautical tradition stretching back over thousand years. In historical records dating back the 10th century the island town of Urk is mentioned for the first time. The island was an island in the former Zuiderzee and had an open connecting to the North Sea.
By the completion of the Afsluitdijk in 1932 the Zuiderzee became the IJsselmeer and the island was cut off from the sea. It remained an island until 1939. In that year a dike from the mainland to the island ended the island status. A few years later the waters surrounding Urk became reclaimed land.
The mainstay of the town’s economy has always been fishing. After the IJsselmeer was formed, the Urkers had to travel further to fish on the open North Sea.
Despite being cut off from the sea the island’s inhabitants lost none of their maritime affinity, resourcefulness or business-minded attitude. This is clear from the continuing quality of the first-class work and reputation today.
